Fantasy Football 2014 - My Championship Matchup

To my surprise, I'll be competing for my league's championship this weekend in fantasy football. I really wasn't happy with my draft this year, after missing out on Andrew Luck. He'd been buried in the CBS pre-rankings, so I figured I could wait a bit on taking him, but, of course, the top-ranked team that ended up going 12-2, and picked right after me at #2 (I picked #1 overall), took him one spot before I would've.

And then I got off to a brutally slow start, which only reinforced my pessimism. As an uber-fantasy nerd, I think I probably hit rock bottom when I accidentally slept-in (I'm on the West Coast) and left Arian Foster on my active roster, even though he'd been ruled out due to an injury about 1 hour before kickoff. That's a total rookie move, which never happens to me. NEVER! (*I look to the sky for solace, where I find none*... ok... maybe a little too dramatic, but you get the point). Of course, he earned me a big fat goose egg for his slot & I ended up losing that particular game by a score of 77-70. The worst part? I had 2 running backs on my bench -- one scored 8 points and the other scored 9. No joke.  I still remember it like it was yesterday. Those numbers were burned into memory forever...

To boot, LeSean McCoy, who I drafted with the #1 overall pick, didn't play like a #1 pick at all. In fact, I don't think he put up elite numbers in even a single game this season. Granted, he didn't play terribly compared to the rest of the league, and for most of the season, he was running neck-and-neck with the #2 overall pick, Jamaal Charles (until Charles surpassed him later in the season). On the plus-side, he was a much better pick than Adrian Peterson, who ended up going #3 overall. So, at least there's that. In retrospect, I should've taken DeMarco Murray #1 overall, but hardly anyone saw that coming. Even if I'd had a gut feeling about him, it's awfully hard to go against the "safe" consensus pick when you're picking that high. So, really, my only choice was either McCoy or Charles, & I botched it. So much for that.

Yet, ever so slowly, my team started gaining steam, thanks in no small part to Arian Foster, who, once healthy, consistently dominated week-in, week-out. He played much more like a #1 pick than McCoy did, that's for sure. I was also fortunate enough to grab Odell Beckham out of the free agent pool just before he became one of the hottest commodities in the league, which provided me with a legit #1 WR for the second half of the season. And, believe it or not, as of today, Russell Wilson is the #4 ranked QB this season, according to ESPN rankings (he's #7 on CBS, which scores it a little differently, but still very good nonetheless). And, to boot, my Lions/Rams combo gave me the #1 ranked D/ST in the league. By season's end, I'd been the highest-scoring team in my league for 6-straight weeks and ended up making the playoffs as the Wild Card with an 8-6 record.

As the Wild Card, I faced off against the aforementioned #1 team last week (i.e. the guy who drafted Andrew Luck). He'd already beaten me twice, and with the likes of Luck, Jamaal Charles & Jordy Nelson running on all cylinders for him, my chances of advancing to the championship game seemed exceedingly slim. And, after leaving Jeremy Hill & his 26 pts on the bench in favor of LeGarrette Blount & his 9 pts, I knew I was screwed. But with a little bit of luck, and Odell Beckham, I was able to slay Goliath. The #1 team just so happened to post their lowest point-total of the season, scoring under 100 pts for the first time all year. I took it 92-87, which, granted, was a little too close for my liking, especially with all those pts sitting on my bench, but I'll take it every time, regardless. A win is a win. No complaints here.

Similarly, the #3 team upset the #2 team as well, so it will be a battle of the underdogs for the championship. The matchup will be as follows (CBS's projections favor me by 6 points, but that doesn't mean much, given their track record):

My Team
QB - Russell Wilson, SEA
RB - LeSean McCoy, PHI
RB - Arian Foster, HOU
WR - Odell Beckham, NYG
WR - Roddy White, ATL
FLX - Jeremy Hill, CIN
TE - Jason Witten, DAL
K - Steven Hauschka, SEA
D/ST - Lions, DET
Bench - Joseph Randle, DAL
Bench - LeGarrette Blount, NE
Bench - Julian Edelman, NE
Bench - Panthers, CAR
Bench - Rams, STL

My Opponent
QB - Matt Ryan, ATL
RB - Marshawn Lynch, SEA
RB - Justin Forsett, BAL
WR - Dez Bryant, DAL
WR - Vincent Jackson, TB
FLX - DeSean Jackson, WSH
TE - Julius Thomas, DEN
K - Adam Vinatieri, IND
D/ST - Cardinals, ARI
Bench - Jonas Gray, NE
Bench - Malcolm Floyd, SD
Bench - Anquan Boldin, SF
Bench - Travis Kelce, KC
Bench - 49ers, SF

Again, I'm not too thrilled with my chances, but I never expected to get this far in the first place, and no matter whether I win or not, I'm assured a cash-prize, even with a 2nd place finish. So, that's a nice consolation, but it would drive me nuts to make it this far, only to fall in the end. And with reports out of Philly that Chris Polk is running first team reps in practice after his 3 TD game, instead of LeSean McCoy, I'm starting to second-guess my choice to start him. But, I simply can't sit the #1 overall pick in the championship game for a crapshoot like Joseph Randle or LeGarrette Blount. There's a chance Julian Edelman might outscore him, but I wouldn't count on that either, given the plethora of targets Tom Brady is known to utilize from game-to-game. So, I figure, unless I get definitive news that McCoy has been benched, I'm rolling with him. On a side-note, I claimed the Panthers D/ST off waivers this week in an effort to keep them off my opponent's roster. I have no idea whether he would've added them or not, but they are projected to score more points than either of the D/STs he has on his roster. So, I'd rather not chance it. We'll just have to see who's left standing Tuesday morning. Stay tuned.

Fantasy Hockey 2014 - My Recent Moves

With the NHL season well underway, my fantasy team (12-team, standard roto, CBS money-league) currently sits in the middle of the pack in 6th place. And although they've picked it up a bit of late, they've been fairly disappointing -- Carey Price, I'm looking at you. Both Jonathan Toews, and especially Jordan Eberle have gotten off to sluggish starts, but Price has been the main culprit to blame for my team's lackluster performance, posting a sickly 2.78/0.912 average between the pipes, which, needless to say, is pretty much the opposite of what we've come to expect from the guy over the years.

Granted, I am happy with my free agent acquisitions, especially on defense. But I debated long & hard whether or not to drop Alexander Edler or Roman Josi for Trevor Daley. I ultimately dropped Edler, because he'd been in the midst of a point-slump after posting several to open the season, and Josi was just starting to heat up. Of course, Edler went nuts right after I dropped him, and exploded up the D-rankings, but Josi has played relatively well (and has far more upside), and Daley has already payed off for me, posting 10 points, including 5 goals, in 14 games. I'm actually a believer in him -- even though he's a 31 year old bruiser who's never posted more than 27 points in a season -- because he's suddenly been thrust into the role of PP quarterback with the departure of Stephane Robidas in the offseason, and the injury that's kept out ol' man Gonchar. But he's really thrived in the role to date, and looks like he's found new life in his career as a top-2, offensive-minded D-man.

My current roster
F - John Tavares, NYI
F - Jonathan Toews, CHI
F - Henrik Zetterberg, DET
F - Henrik Sedin, VAN
F - Nick Foligno, CLS

D - Trevor Daley, DAL
G - Carey Price, MON
G - Jimmy Howard, DET
Bench - Sean Monahan, CGY
Bench - Mike Cammalleri, NJ
Bench - Nikita Kucherov, TB
Bench - Tanner Pearson, LA

I just added both Monahan & Cammalleri. I had considered picking up Johnny Gaudreau instead of Monahan, but he's  been more of a playmaker than a sniper. Whereas the Flames have virtually made Monahan the centerpiece of their offense over the last few games. And, while they both have all-star caliber potential, Monahan's star is the brighter of the two. Plus, if I were to add both Gaudreau & Cammalleri, I'd probably have the smallest team in the league. I don't think their combined height could possibly top more than 6'0. Cammalleri must be about 3 or 4 feet tall, and Gaudreau is probably a head shorter than that. Lol.

-Added Trevor Daley (D - DAL); dropped Alexander Edler (D - VAN)

Fantasy Basketball 2014 - My Recent Moves

With roughly two weeks of the NBA season in the books, my fantasy team (12-team, standard-roto, CBS money league) has jumped out to a commanding lead. Granted, looks can be deceiving this early in the season, as stats & the accompanying rankings can swing wildly when there is so little to go on, but it is a little reassuring nonetheless.

I currently lead the 2nd place team 77 - 68, but the score was as lopsided as 84 - 62 two days ago. And, I might add, whereas only a few stats separate us in certain categories, I've nearly doubled the point & rebound totals of the next team behind me and hold a sizable lead over 3's as well. Again, anything can and WILL happen with some 70-odd games left for teams to play, but I'm hoping I can use the waiver wire to compensate, or at least, not to hurt me. It can be a double-edged sword if you make the wrong call... which I might have, in regards to KJ McDaniels.

Although I probably will regret dropping McDaniels at some point this season (if not already), I was able to claim Amir Johnson - who looks like he could be in for a breakout season if he can stay healthy - off waivers. Similarly, I beat the rest of my league to the wire for Ed Davis, who could be in for a big season as well if he can get the minutes, after Julius Randle went down. And, I was able to pull the trigger on the surprisingly hot triggerman (rim shot), Chris Copeland, as well. He's been on fire for the desperately thin Pacers to start the season, and has already replaced CJ Miles at SF in the starting lineup. There's a relatively good chance he could end up serving as a sort of Ryan Anderson-light if he can keep up the pace, and there is at least some evidence to suggest he can. He's had success in clutch moments before, most notably in the playoffs with the Knicks, and may be one of those guys who just needed the minutes to take off. Will there come a day when I'll wish I still had KJ on my roster instead of Copes (or Trey Burke, or Anderson Varejao, or Ed Davis, etc.)? It's very well possible (the guy is a defensive stud, and if he can ever put any offense together at the NBA-level, he'll be a valuable asset on fantasy rosters). But it's hard to ignore a guy who's come out of the gate swinging, averaging 17 ppg, 6 rpg & 2.5 assists per game, with plenty of 3's to boot. Fluke or not, you've got to roll the dice on gaudy numbers like that.

Fantasy Hockey 2014 - My Recent Moves

Following a flurry of moves to start the season, my fantasy hockey team now sits in 3rd place, after hanging around in the middle of the pack for the first week or two of the season. Granted, some owners might call me impatient, considering how many free agent moves I made to begin the year, but I feel like, out of all the fantasy sports I play, I'm probably strongest at hockey. And I don't make moves without carefully considering them first.

Firstly, we'll take a look at my current roster, and then I'll break down some of the moves I made:

F - John Tavares, NYI
F - Jonathan Toews, CHI
F - Henrik Zetterberg, DET
F - Henrik Sedin, VAN
F - Jordan Eberle, EDM
F - Tanner Pearson, LA
D - Dion Phaneuf, TOR
D - Roman Josi, NSH
D - Alexander Edler, VAN
D - Dennis Wideman, CGY
G - Carey Price, MON
G - Jimmy Howard, DET
Bench - Alex Galchenyuk, MON
Bench - Tyler Bozak, TOR
Bench - Nick Foligno, CLS
Bench - Devante Smith-Pelly, ANA

Recent moves:

-Added Alex Galchenyuk (C - MON); dropped Brent Burns (W - SJ).
Yes, Brent Burns is one of the hottest players in the league right now. So, what was I thinking dropping him? Unfortunately, on CBS, he's only eligible at Forward (I even emailed CBS fantasy hockey to confirm this. He won't gain eligibility on defense until next season). And while he's currently hot enough to start at forward, there's no way he'll keep it up. His highest point total for a season was 48, which came in the '13-'14 season while playing at Forward. So, the chances of him surpassing that number on Defense aren't too good. And, regardless of how well he's playing at the moment, he would've been riding my bench, because I simply can't start a defenseman at Forward. But, of course, Burns was claimed off waivers by another owner (who probably thinks he'll gain eligibility on D at some point during the season). I predict he'll ultimately get dropped again when that owner figures out he won't. Galchenyuk, on the other hand, is a legitimate stud, and could very well break out in a big way this season.

-Added Tyler Bozak (C - TOR); dropped Alexander Semin (RW - CAR).
Honestly, I don't know why I drafted Semin in the first place. At the time, it seemed like a good idea, but I was almost instantly down on him, and after he got off to a slow start, I cut bait and ran. He too was claimed off waivers, but was recently dropped again. Is he capable of a point-per-game production? It's possible. But when you factor in age, health, and the mediocre team he plays for, I don't think his chances are too good. Bozak, on the other hand, is skating on the top line in Toronto, in between Phil Kessel & James van Riemsdyk, and has been on a tear since last season, when he was on a near point-per-game pace while he was healthy. Is he as talented as Semin? No. But he does have a far better opportunity to produce.

-Added Nick Foligno (LW - CLS); dropped Scott Hartnell (LW - CLS).
Ok, so this one hurts a little bit (no pun intended). Foligno has been on fire to start the season, playing on the top line in Columbus with Ryan Johansen, but the moment I dropped Hartnell for him, he get knocked out against the boards, and Hartnell explodes for 4 assists in one game. Doh! Can't win em all, I suppose. But it appears as if Foligno should be ok, and should resume skating on the first line when he returns to the team (if he misses any time at all). Hartnell is a solid player in his own right, and this was a far tougher decision than dropping either Burns or Semin. But, assuming he's alright, it appears Foligno might finally be living up to his billing as an elite power forward. And if he can remain on the top line after Brandon Dubinsky returns from the IR, he could be in store for a major breakout.

-Added Tanner Pearson (LW - LA); dropped John Gibson (G - ANA).
Though Gibson has finally returned to the Duck's lineup after his 6 goal debacle on opening night, he won't be returning to mine. I dropped him immediately following his disastrous opening night and scooped up Pearson, who has been on fire skating with the red hot Jeff Carter & Tyler Toffoli in Los Angeles. And while Gibson should ultimately turn it around, Frederik Andersen has all but solidified himself as the #1 net minder in Anaheim, and unless he suddenly implodes, it looks like Gibson may have to wait another year before he gets a shot to be the man between the pipes.

-Added Dennis Wideman (D - CGY); dropped Eric Gelinas (D - NJ).
Technically, I dropped Trevor Daley for Wideman, as I dropped Gelinas for Daley originally. Most owners would probably opt for Daley over Wideman at the moment, but Wideman has the proven track record, whereas Daley does not. Yes, Daley is quarterbacking the power play in Dallas, and will surely surpass his season point totals this year. But, similarly, Wideman is QBing the PP for a suddenly potent Flame's offense and has shown in the past that he is capable of producing big numbers on defense. Plus, he's already scored 5 goals, and should easily crack the double-digit mark in that regard as well.

-Added Devante Smith-Pelly (RW - ANA); dropped Hampus Lindholm (D - ANA).
Although Lindholm has been playing well enough, and will certainly help you with +/-, I couldn't resist adding the new line mate of Corey Perry & Ryan Getzlaf. Yes, you read that right. Smith-Pelly is skating alongside possibly the best 1-2 punch in the league. Granted, he could still use a little more time on the PP, but if Perry & Getzlaf isn't a recipe for success, I don't know what is.

---Best Pick: Anthony Davis (C - NO) at #7. I was shocked to see Davis slip so far, even though it was at least partly my fault since I too passed on him at #5. He's a consensus top 3 pick, and I've seen him go as high as #1 in some drafts, over LeBron (after Durant got hurt, at least). Though Cousins is a legit top 10 pick, there's no way he should've gone over Davis.
So why did I pass on him if I like him so much? It came down to position scarcity -- or rather, my drafting habits. In the past, I've had a tough time drafting shooting guards, and usually end up trailing in points almost every single season I've played. And even though SG is fairly deep this year, I knew I wouldn't be able to bring myself to draft a player like Dwyane Wade or DeMar DeRozan with a high pick. Perhaps I underrate them, but there were only 4 SGs on the board this year who I felt comfortable drafting as starters - and I got two of them (Harden & Kobe. Ellis & Thompson were the other two). In any case, I was hoping Andre Drummond would fall to me in Rd. 2 & take care of my defensive stats since CBS had him buried so low in their rankings. But, alas, it wasn't to be.

---Worst Pick: Kevin Durant (SF - OKC) at #8. How can Durant possibly be considered the worst pick at the back end of the first round? It might have something to do with the fact that he's all but guaranteed to miss at least 20 - 25 games this season, and possibly more. Granted, I understand it's a hard name to pass up in a fantasy draft, but I had him ranked at #23, I believe, which was very generous, might I add. Some of the more conservative rankings had placed him just barely inside of the top 50. So taking him at #8 is a huge reach. Not sure if this owner was asleep at the wheel and hadn't heard that Durant had broken his foot, or what. Maybe he doesn't buy into the severity of the prognosis, but it's an injury that has cost some players an entire season to recover from, and team doctors have urged him to take an extra-cautious approach in his recovery, so as not to cause further damage. On the other hand, when he does return, he should retake his place as the #1 player in fantasy, so there's that. And, yes, he could beat the odds and return early. But it's a tremendous risk to take with your 1st rd. pick.

---Best Pick: Andre Drummond (C - DET) at #19. I did a sort of voodoo dance and hexed my computer when this pick was made, because I had Drummond in my queue and was ready to take him. Why? Because he looks like he's taken the next step into elite territory, and has been killing it during the preseason. There's a good chance he could rival Anthony Davis for the top spot at C this year. He may not score quite as much, but he should be lethal on boards and blocks, and I'm talking 12+ rpg & 2.5+ bpg. If he can add 15-17 ppg to his stat line, he's all but guaranteed to be a top pick next season.

---Worst Pick: Derrick Rose (PG - CHI) at #21. Though you could fairly criticize me for taking Kobe at #20, Rose is an even riskier pick with far less upside. Whereas we know what Kobe is capable of, there are questions as to whether Rose will ever be a superstar in this league. Sure, he has the talent. But he hasn't been able to capitalize on it, mostly due to the devastating injury he suffered so early in his career. Most fantasy owners have him pegged as about the #10-#12-ranked PG in the league, given his average draft position, somewhere in between Mike Conley & Ricky Rubio, and most analysts seem to think that's being a bit generous. So to take him right after Lillard & Irving went off the board was pretty major reach, albeit a reach a lot of owners seem to be making this season.

#36. Eric Bledsoe, PG - PHO
Brooklyn Brawlers

---Best Pick: Chris Bosh (PF - MIA) at #29 (if I don't say so myself). I suppose you could put Dirk Nowitzki or Goran Dragic right up there as well, but Bosh is a legit 2nd rd. pick, and pretty much cancels out my reach on Kobe (taking Bosh at #20 & Kobe at #29 would've made a lot more sense, but I doubt Kobe would've lasted that long, oddly enough). Though a disappointment during the LeBron-era, Bosh should be allowed to shine in Miami now that the team is essentially his. He's been aggressive on offense early in the preseason, and has been playing down low in the post again, instead of manning the 3 in deference to King James like he did in years past. So I should get pretty good value here, I'm hoping.

---Worst Pick: Deron Williams (PG - BKN) at #34. Perhaps this would've been a good pick 3 or 4 years ago, but in 2014, Williams is a risky selection anywhere within the top 50. He hasn't been the same player since moving to Brooklyn, and probably sunk to his lowest low last season. Is he capable of bouncing back? Of course. But he hasn't inspired much confidence in fantasy owners for quite some time. So, if he doesn't get it turned around in rapid fashion, his trade value will be virtually nil, and he'll end up being one of those players too good to bench, but too mediocre to boost your stats in any one category.

Fantasy Basketball 2014 - My Team

My fantasy team drafted this evening and I'm fairly pleased with the results, although, I did take a pretty major risk by drafting Kobe in the middle of the 2nd round of a 12 team draft (standard roto money-league on CBS). I had planned on taking Andre Drummond with that pick, but he went off the board one turn ahead of me, so I figured I'd roll the dice on the ol' Mamba, given how well he's been playing in the preseason (FYI - he scored 27, 26, & 27 in his last 3 preseason games, and his coach, Byron Scott, just announced that he'll play 30-40 mins per night). He's obviously a pretty major injury risk, but I think there's still enough upside there to warrant the selection. As a Los Angeles-native, I've seen what the man is capable of and have learned through experience not to doubt him, but the triple whammy of age, injury & a sub-par team could come back to bite him this season. Or, he could be back at full-strength, like his coach & trainer claim, and be in line for big minutes on a  nightly basis playing for a team on which he's the only legitimate weapon. Only time will tell which Kobe we'll get.

Another questionable decision came in either the 4th or 5th rd. when I decided to take Rudy Gay over Klay Thompson. Thompson will undoubtedly end the season as the higher ranked player, but I already had two shooting guards (I took James Harden with the #5 pick overall) and knew the SF position was pretty thin this season. But I may regret it, given the fact I had room for Thompson in a UT spot and could've tried to land Jabari Parker or Trevor Ariza later on. But hopes usually go by the wayside when there are 12 teams drafting. It's difficult to project who will make it back to you, especially considering CBS's piss-poor rankings (like usual). There was really no way of knowing where teams had players ranked, because the default rankings were so shockingly bad. But Gay is a strong player nonetheless. He just tends to get a little overrated because of position scarcity, and I fell into the trap this season.

As for the picks I'm happy with - I'm really glad to have landed Nerlens Noel with the #77 overall pick (although DeAndre Jordan stayed on the board an awfully long time, and I could've had him in any rd. prior to that -- think he went only a couple picks before I took Noel). The guy is a beast, and he should thrive this season in Philly, so long as he can stay healthy. Likewise, I foresee a big year from my other C, Nikola Vucevic, who could be in store for a breakout season. I was also happy to have landed both Tony Parker & Trey Burke as low(er) end PGs, after drafting heavy at SG and PF/C for the first couple rds.

In any case, this is how my team stacks up:

PG - Tony Parker, SA
SG - James Harden, HOU
SF - Rudy Gay, SAC
PF - Chris Bosh, MIA
C - Nikola Vucevic, ORL
G - Kobe Bryant, LAL
F - Jeff Green, BOS
UT - Nerlens Noel, PHI
UT - Trey Burke, UTA
UT - Eric Gordon, NO
Bench - Marcus Smart, BOS
Bench - Anderson Varejao, CLE
Bench - KJ McDaniels, PHI

It's a pretty shallow roster, so I should be able to add to my bench early on in the season, if either Varejao or McDaniels falters, and/or I see any standout free agents. Smart should do well, especially with Rondo out, but rookies are always a shaky proposition in fantasy. McDaniels, clearly, is even shakier, but he has been having a strong preseason. I believe he just blocked 4 shots the other night, which isn't bad for a player listed at SF. I had tried to draft Jameer Nelson with that pick, but had hit my PG limit and had to settle for my second choice. I could sign Nelson once he clears waivers, since he went undrafted. I know, strange you can sign him but not draft him, but that's CBS for you. Their draft requirements don't match their actual in-season roster requirements. Go figure.

Draft recap to follow.

Fantasy Hockey 2014 - My Team

My fantasy hockey team drafted this evening, and I had the #5 overall pick, out of 12 teams. And I'm pretty happy with how it shook out. I'm playing in a standard roto money league on CBS, as per usual, and this will be my only team for the season.

Lick clockwork, the CBS rankings are always screwed up, year-in, year-out, which is nice, in a sense, because if the other teams in the league fail to pre-rank, quite a few players drop in the draft. On the down side, there are tight roster limits on CBS, and you can only draft so many players per position. So, I wasn't able to draft an extra center or goalie when they were at the top of my list, and had to settle for a winger or defender instead.

In any case, this is who I ended up with (draft recap to follow):

C - John Tavares, NYI
C - Jonathan Toews, CHI
C - Henrik Sedin, VAN
W - Henrik Zetterberg, DET
W - Jordan Eberle, EDM
W - Scott Hartnell, CLS
D - Dion Phaneuf, TOR
D - Roman Josi, NSH
D - Hampus Lindholm, ANA
D - Alexander Edler, VAN
G - Carey Price, MON
G - Jimmy Howard, DET
Bench - John Gibson, ANA
Bench - Alexander Semin, CAR
Bench - Brent Burns, SJ
Bench - Eric Gelinas, NJ

FYI - Brent Burns is listed as a winger on CBS instead of a defenseman (he's changing positions this season), but I plan on using him on defense once he gains eligibility.
