Bench - Yovani Gallardo, MIL
Really, when you look at that bench, it's amazing that I'm still in 2nd place. Because that's a good core of players who are either injured, or in Yovani Gallardo's case, underperforming. My top two draft picks (Joey Votto & Giancarlo Stanton) have been killing me. Between them they've accounted for 0 home runs, 8 runs and 2 RBIs, which, needless to say, is pathetic. Stanton's slow start can be explained by injury, as he's currently sidelined with a pulled something or other, but Votto has just been crap. Granted, I wasn't counting on 40 HRs from the guy, but I was expecting better than a goose egg in the HR category and a lackluster .277 average to start the season.
Similarly, my pitching is going to be hurting now that Cueto went down, and Gallardo sucks. Jose Fernandez has been able to pick up some of the slack, but I'm probably going to have to trade for a pitcher at some point. Ideally, I'd like to unload Chris Davis for a top-end pitcher, but if no one bites, I may try to move David Wright once Chase Headley returns. I could also use a closer or two. I did have Jose Valverde on my bench, but I dropped him for Brandon Moss when Stanton got hurt. My thinking was Valverde isn't very good anyway. Because even if he does eventually reclaim the starting role, most are projecting him to post an ERA anywhere from between 3.90 - 5.20. So, I'd rather look for saves elsewhere -- wait for an injury or an ousting (too bad I slept on Kelvin Herrera & Jim Henderson, because they would've been perfect for me).
I had a few options at MI with Erick Aybar going down. Initially, I picked up Omar Infante, because he's always fairly reliable and plays for a good team. But I ultimately decided to take a chance on Jhonny Peralta instead. He plays for the same team as Infante, of course, but also has the potential to be a top-10 at his position, which Infante does not. Of course, Peralta was terrible last season, and is by no means a hot name in fantasy, but there is a fairly good chance he'll hit 20 HRs this year, which is a pretty big deal for a SS. And if he can keep his average around the .250 - .260 mark, he'll be a steal off the waiver wire.
And, finally, with Johnny Cueto going down, I hope to claim Tony Cingrani off waivers on Monday. I doubt I will, because I'm not too high up in the claim order, but a rival owner recently added him and dropped him before Cueto got hurt, so he's now up for grabs. I'm willing to drop Kenley Jansen for him, even though he hasn't even gotten the call yet, because his potential is so off the charts. Scouts are claiming he's the left-handed version of Stephen Strasburg -- and even if he's not quite that good, I'm definitely willing to roll the dice on him in exchange for a setup man.
