Fantasy Baseball 2013 - Recent Moves

My team has been hurting lately, both literally and figuratively, and has taken a dive in the standings, from 1st place at the beginning of last week, all the way down to 6th place. It's a big money league, so competition is tough, and pretty much all the teams are sitting neck and neck right now.

I've done a bit of an overhaul on my team, as of late, in an effort to fix a few holes. With Austin Jackson (OF - DET) landing on the DL, I had to pick up a replacement. And, I just added a slew of pitchers to make up for the (potential) loss of David Price (SP - TB). He strained his triceps in his last start, and may miss his next start at the very least, if he isn't DL-bound.

So, here's how my roster currently shakes out:

C - Yadier Molina, STL
C - Russell Martin, PIT
1B - Adam LaRoche, WSH
2B - Brandon Phillips, CIN
3B - David Wright, NYM
SS - Andrelton Simmons, ATL
MI - JJ Hardy, BAL
CI - Chase Headley, SD
OF - Justin Upton, ATL
OF - Chris Davis, BAL
OF - Michael Bourn, CLE
OF - Nelson Cruz, TEX
OF - Josh Willingham, MIN
UT - Nolan Arenado, COL
P - Johnny Cueto, CIN
P - Gio Gonzalez, WSH
P - Jeff Samardzija, CHC
P - Lance Lynn, STL
P - Andy Pettitte, NYY
P - AJ Griffin, OAK
P - Francisco Liriano, PIT
P - Edward Mujica, STL
P - Kevin Gregg, CHC
Bench - Giancarlo Stanton, MIA
Bench - Austin Jackson, DET
Bench - David Price, TB
Bench - Yovani Gallardo, MIL
Bench - Michael Pineda, NYY
Bench - David Hernandez, ARI

Waiver Wire
-I claimed Josh Willingham (OF - MIN) off waivers for Kyle Lohse (SP - MIL).
I was a little surprised I got this claim, as I sixth in line, but I did. And even though I need pitching more than hitting, Lohse for Willingham is a trade I'll make all day, every day. So I immediately plugged him into my starting lineup and haven't looked back.

-I claimed Nolan Arenado (3B - COL) off waivers for Mike Moustakas (3B - KC).
Another surprising claim, as I was tenth in line when I got this one. And it was pretty much a no-brainer. Moustakas is crap, and Arenado has a ton of potential hitting in that Rockies lineup at Coors Field. I'd picked up Moustakas after a quick hot streak, hoping it was a sign of things to come. But he promptly reverted back to his previous form and posted 0-fer after 0-fer. So, I'm done with that experiment. Luckily, I never put him in my starting lineup.

Free Agents
-I added AJ Griffin (SP - OAK) for Scott Kazmir (SP - CLE).
I don't doubt Kazmir can make a comeback this season, but I need help in the WHIP category, and Kazmir is definitely not the guy for that. Because, even if he gets his strikeouts (which isn't a guarantee), he's prone to the walk and the longball, and will wreak havoc on your ERA & WHIP from time to time. And, although he's unproven, Griffin looks a lot better in that regard. If nothing else, he's looking like a WHIP specialist, and that's exactly what I need.

-I added Andy Pettitte (SP - NYY) for Juan Pierre (OF - MIA).
Kind of surprising Pettitte lasted in the free agent pool as long as he did, but Pierre became expendable after Michael Bourn returned to my lineup, and decided to make a move on him after a handful of pitchers got hurt and/or imploded over the last two nights. I knew Pettitte wouldn't last long if I didn't make a move, so I did.

-I added Michael Pineda (SP - NYY) for Wade Miley (SP - ARI).
Let's face it. Miley is decidedly average, whereas Pineda at least has the potential to be great. And with reports coming out of the Yankees organization that he's been hitting 95 mph on the gun, while rehabbing from shoulder surgery, I felt like I'd take a chance. I didn't have any plans of starting Miley anytime soon. And I'd much rather have Pineda riding my bench, especially since he could return as early as the beginning of June. It's already mid-May, so if Miley could ride my bench for two or three weeks, so can Pineda.
