Admittedly, I've always thought of Daniel Murphy (2B - NYM) as a decidedly average player. Or, better put, I haven't thought about him much at all, in terms of fantasy relevance. But, he was dropped in my league last week and has been sitting in the free agent pool all this time, while I've watched him go on a tear, raising his average from about .260 to over .300 during that time. Which led me to take a second look at his statistics. And, I found that if you look at it objectively, and remove yourself from the hype, the guy is basically Howie Kendrick (2B - LAA) without the name recognition. He's basically good for a .280 - .300 average, 6 - 12 HRs and 10+ stolen bases, which is pretty damn good, coming at the thinnest position in baseball. Kendrick gets drafted in the middle-to-late rounds of drafts year-in, year-out, but Murphy, comparatively, either goes undrafted in shallow leagues, or is taken dead last, after everyone else is gone.
So, with that new perspective, I decided to cut loose Andrelton Simmons (SS - ATL) at my middle-infield position in order to pick up Murphy, even though Simmons hit a HR today. I like Simmons well enough as a player, and think he will produce at the top of a potent Braves' lineup, but he's been an average-killer thus far, and I simply need BA much more than HRs at this point, especially since I'm rostering JJ Hardy (SS - BAL). And, unlike Simmons, Hardy's power is legit. I pretty much know I can count on him for 20+ HRs, whereas Simmons is a crapshoot. And, I certainly didn't need them both, either way.
